William C. Murtaugh, 62, of Syracuse, passed away Friday, July 24th, 2026 peacefully at his home surrounded by his husband and loving family.

Wil was born May 13, 1964 in Utica NY to William and Elizabeth “Betty” Murtaugh. He was a graduate of Holland Patent High School. He achieved a Bachelor of Science at Utica College at Syracuse University and his Masters of Economics at Syracuse University. Wil went on to a successful 28 year career in the non profit world at ACR Health. He held various roles eventually working his way up to Executive Director.

During Wil’s impactful tenure, he served as a vital bridge between the non-profit and the broader community. In this role, Wil built and maintained crucial partnerships with local corporations, philanthropic foundations, and public officials. His strategic vision drove the research and implementation of diverse funding streams and innovative project development, ensuring the organization’s long-term sustainability and growth, raising over 4.5 million dollars.

Driven by a deep commitment to those battling chronic illness, Wil was a tireless advocate at every level of government. He regularly lobbied local, regional, state, and federal officials to secure essential funding and policy support. Wil's dedicated advocacy ensured that individuals living with chronic conditions received the sustained resources, care, and representation they truly deserved.

Wil was a member of the First Unitarian Universalist Society of Syracuse, Elevate Fitness Tennis League, former president of Sedgwick Farm Tennis Club, former president and one of the founders of Central New York Tennis Association (CNYTA), Captain of Marsh Cup, Captain of USTA Local, Sectional, Regional and National Teams, Division 1 Tennis Scholarship Syracuse University, #1 Singles/ #1 Doubles- 4 Consecutive Years 90-10 Win/Loss record, USTA/Eastern Sectional Courage award recipient, Participated in 5 USTA National Championships men’s and mixed doubles. Member with the 17th Ward Democratic Committee, Member of Association of Fundraising Professionals.

Wil lived life with a zest for adventure and a heart that had room for everyone, leaving behind a legacy as bright and unforgettable as his infectious smile. A truly kind and deeply caring soul, he was the foundation for those lucky enough to know him always ready with unwavering support, an encouraging word, or a listening ear. Wil had a rare gift for making everyone around him feel seen, valued, and loved, lifting spirits effortlessly wherever he went. Though his presence will be deeply missed, the warmth of his spirit, his boundless joy, and the endless light he brought into the world will live on in the hearts of all who cherished him.

Wil is predeceased by his father, William C. Murtaugh and his sister, Kim LaVair

He is survived by his Husband, William P. Louer, mother, Elizabeth J. Murtaugh, siblings, Lori Dutcher, Jeannine (Andrew) Murtaugh Reath, Jeffrey Murtaugh, Kathleen Murtaugh, sister in laws, Mary Garno, Anne Louer, Margaret “Peggy” (Joseph) Dwyer, brother in laws, Robert Louer, Richard (Pamela) Louer and Daniel Louer as well as several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

The family will receive friends and relatives on Saturday, August 1st at the Edward J. Ryan & Son Funeral Home from 2PM-5PM. A celebration of life will be held at Syracuse Stage at 10AM on Sunday, August 2, 2026.
