John A. Hemmer, 86, of Syracuse, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 25, 2026. John was a lifelong resident of Syracuse. He graduated from Jamesville-DeWitt High School and earned his degree in mathematics from Syracuse University. He dedicated 35 years of his career to Upstate Medical Center, first working in the Bioelectronics Department and later in the Bursar’s Department.

A man of strong faith, John was a longtime communicant of Holy Family Church, where he was a member for more than 50 years. He also taught Faith Formation for many years, sharing his faith and knowledge with generations of young people.

John had a lifelong love of playing bridge. He was a member of the American Contract Bridge League (ACBL) and competed in both national and international championships. He achieved the prestigious rank of Sapphire Life Master.

John recently celebrated his 60th wedding anniversary with the love of his life, his wife, Kathleen (Jordan) Hemmer. Together, they built a life filled with family, faith and cherished memories.

John was predeceased by his parents, Alfred and Alice; his sister, Maria Brown; and his brothers, Tony, Fritz and Richard.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Kathleen; his son, Gregory; his daughters, Dawn Hemmer and Sheila (Erik) Heppeler; his grandsons, Caleb and Finn Heagerty; their father, Michael S. Heagerty; and many nieces and nephews.

John will be deeply missed by his family, friends and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, September 1, 2026 at 11am at Holy Family Church, 127 Chapel Drive. Calling hours will be held prior at church 10am to 11am. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, DeWitt, NY.
