Joan Viola Barthel Phelan, 87, of Syracuse, passed away peacefully on December 20, 2019 with her family by her side. She worked for many years at Morey's Mill in Taunton and retired from St. Camillus after over 20 years. She was life member of the Taunton Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary and active member of St. Charles/St. Ann's Parish.
Joan was pre-deceased by her husband, Edward F. Phelan, Sr. on January 19, 2014. She is survived by her children, Mary Phelan, John (Mary) Phelan, Edward (Kathleen) Phelan and Joanne (Mark) Chilton; grandchildren, Carrie (Jeff) Snyder, David (Nicole) Flewelling, James (Jesseca Barrette) Abert, Melissa (Scott) Kowalewski, Kevin (Meaghan) Phelan, Christina (Martin Strait) Phelan, Mike (Jordanne Conklin) and Joe Phelan, Becki and Dan Chilton; great-grandchildren, Anthony, Victoria, Audriana, Adeline, Blake, Hadley, Tatum, Grant, Connor and Baby Phelan arriving soon; sister, Beatrice Hettler and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
Services will be held Monday, December 23, 2019 at 11:00 am at St. Ann's Church on Onondaga Blvd. Calling hours will be held prior to the service at church from 10am to 11am. Burial will be in Onondaga County Veterans Cemetery.
The family would like to thank the staff at Upstate Medical University Hospital and the Van Duyn staff on 7th floor North for their care and compassion.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Taunton Volunteer Fire Department, 4300 Onondaga Boulevard, Syracuse, NY 13219.
