Joan Gorman, 94, passed away peacefully at home on May 12th. She was born January 31, 1932 in Syracuse to the late E. Robert and Katherine Heitzman. She graduated from St. Anthony’s school and received her RN degree from Crouse-Irving School of Nursing and BS in Nursing Education from Syracuse University. She gave a neighbor, James Gorman, a ride to a college class and ended up being married to him for nearly 65 years.

Joan was a caregiver who spent her life caring for family, friends and neighbors. She enjoyed helping people and more than anything enjoyed spending time with both immediate and extended family. Joan hosted many family gatherings and spent time traveling to visit family all over the US. She enjoyed gardening, playing bridge and reading and spent many afternoons golfing or swimming at Bellevue CC. Joan and Jim were among the first parishioners at St. Ann's church and were very active in church activities, including running the food pantry for years and teaching religious education.

Joan is survived by her sons, James Gorman Jr. and Christopher (Nancy) Gorman, grandchildren, Brad Sniper (Emma Morris) and Emma Gorman, and many beloved nieces, nephews and great-nieces/nephews. 

The family would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to Joan’s caregivers who allowed her to remain at home, especially Donna, Wendy, Helen and Taylor.

Calling hours will be at the Edward J. Ryan Funeral Home on Friday, May 15, 2026 from 4 - 6 and a Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday 10am at St. Charles/St. Ann’s Parish.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Catholic Charities of Onondaga County.
