Father James Fritzen,82, passed away peacefully on August 24, 2026.

He leaves behind a beautiful legacy of faith, friendship, service, and a life well lived. Jim graduated from Christian Brothers Academy, as a member of the last graduating class at the school on Willow Street. He continued his studies at St. Andrew's and St. Bernard's seminaries and was ordained to the priesthood in 1969. Jim served faithfully at several parishes throughout the Syracuse area, including St. Stephen's Church in Phoenix and Christ the King Church in Liverpool. He also served as the Director of the Syracuse Diocesan cemeteries and was the Chaplain for the Syracuse Firefighters from 1974-1985. He was always willing to offer guidance, compassion and a helping hand and he will be remembered not only as a devoted priest, but as a dear friend to many.

Jim was a man who truly enjoyed life. He had a deep love for the outdoors, especially the beautiful Adirondacks. He competed in the 90- Mile Adirondack Canoe Classic several times, embracing the challenge and the beauty of the wilderness he loved. He also enjoyed golfing, skiing and kayaking.

Although our hearts are heavy with his passing, we can be grateful for the many wonderful memories he left behind: the adventures, the laughter, the conversations, the campfires, and most of all, the friendship he so generously shared.

Jim was predeceased by his parents, Herman and Irene Fritzen. He is survived by his brother, John Fritzen (Maryanne); his nephews, John C. Fritzen (Lori) and Matthew Six (Carrie); two great-nieces and a great-nephew and many cousins.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 29, 2026, at St. Stephen 's Church, 469 Main Street, Phoenix, New York. Calling hours will be 9:00 to 11:00 a.m., prior to the Mass. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.

May Father Jim rest peacefully in God's loving arms. May his memory be a blessing to all who knew and loved him and may the light of his faith and friendship continue to shine in our hearts.
