James M. Burns, 81, of Syracuse, NY, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 11, 2024, at Upstate Memorial Hospital surrounded by family.

Born on September 19, 1942, James is survived by his wife, Jo-Ann, daughters, Patricia (Tammy Schoonover) and Kelly (Bruce Allain), brother, Harry, sister-in-law Ann, sister-in-law, Edna Silvernail and numerous nieces and nephews.

James was predeceased by his parents, Henry and Martha Burns, his brothers, Michael and John, his sister, Margaret Cilurzo, his niece, Martha Byrne and his nephew, John.

James was a 1960 graduate of St. Anthony's school and worked at Crouse Hinds before joining his brothers as a police officer at the Syracuse City Police Department.  He retired from the Police Force in 1986 as a Lieutenant and became Director of Security at LeMoyne College.  He then worked for Scrivner in Loss Prevention before retirement.  James was an avid bowler and golfer.  No matter where he went, he would always see someone he knew.

As per his wishes, there will be no calling hours or funeral service.  Burial will be private.  In lieu of flowers please feel free to make a donation to the Upstate Cancer Center Foundation or a charity of your choice.
