Gerald P.
Doner
Sep 18, 1936 — Nov 3, 2026
Syracuse, NY
Gerald P. "Jerry" Doner, 90, of North Syracuse, passed away peacefully on November 3, 2026.
Born on September 18, 1936, on Syracuse's beloved Tipperary Hill, Jerry remained a proud "Tipp Hill" Irishman throughout his life. A devoted communicant of St. Patrick's-St. Brigid's Church, he could always be counted on to celebrate his heritage, especially at the annual St. Patrick's Parade, where his bright green hair became something of a tradition.
Jerry was predeceased by his parents, Edward A. Doner and Helen (Stapleton) Doner; his brothers Edward, Robert, and Richard Doner; and his sister Teresa Punch. He is survived by his sister, Norine (Doner) Wilsch; his sister-in-law, Jean Doner; and many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins who will cherish their memories of him.
Jerry spent most of his working years behind the wheel as a truck driver and was a proud member of Teamsters Local 317. While trucking paid the bills, cars were his true passion. Whether it had four wheels and an engine or needed one, Jerry was interested. He owned and raced sports cars at Watkins Glen and other local tracks and was a lifetime member of the Sports Car Club of America.
If a friend or family member had car trouble, Jerry was usually the first call. He could fix just about anything. And when a car was beyond repair, Jerry still found a use for it. One of his favorite adventures was entering his brother's old Chevy Nova in the New York State Fair Demolition Derby, proving that even a hopeless car could enjoy one last glorious ride.
Jerry's greatest gift was his willingness to help others. Whether offering mechanical advice, lending a hand, sharing a story, or simply making people smile, he was a loving brother, uncle, and friend who never hesitated to be there when needed.
Jerry spent the last year of his life at St. Camillus Nursing Home, where he was blessed with compassionate care and friendship. His family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff who cared for him so kindly and who came to know and enjoy Jerry's company. Their warmth, laughter, and dedication brought comfort to Jerry and meant more to his family than words can express.
"May the roads rise to meet you, Jerry, and may there always be a well-tuned engine waiting for you at the finish line."
Family and friends are invited to call from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. on Monday, November 9, followed immediately by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. at St. Patrick's-St. Brigid's Church, 216 N. Lowell Avenue, Syracuse, NY 13204. Jerry will be laid to rest at St. Agnes Cemetery, Syracuse.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Jerry's memory may be made to St. Patrick's-St. Brigid's Church.
